It's a tricky concept, isn't it? It really should be simple though. Do I think I have the greatest self esteem? No. Some days I hate the way I look.. I'm too fat.. my hair is gross... I hate having glasses.. ugh. We all have those moments though. But as a whole? I'm pretty dang proud of myself.
So yes, while I may struggle with my looks it's really a minor thing. And something I know I can change (with some motivation I can lose weight haha). So why do so many people suffer from low self esteem and how to fix it?
First step? Finding it within yourself. You can not find true happiness in life if you aren't happy with yourself. I think that's a problem with girls. They think a guy is going to fix it all. They think if they get married, it's all going to be rainbows and unicorns. And while I do believe a guy should make you feel better about yourself, your happiness should not rest on his shoulders. That's not fair to him, or yourself.
So, how do you do this? How do you love yourself? Cut the negivaity out of your life. Do what makes you happy. Aren't happy about your weight? Do something. Aren't happy with your "friends?" Do something. Key words there: DO SOMETHING. Change. Get off your butt and make things happen. Stop complaining and do something.
Now, I'm not perfect at this. But I recently cut a lot of people out of my life and it's AMAZING. It's amazing how I found myself becoming someone I did not like. I'm confident in myself and my beliefs, but I found my "need" to "fit in" over taking everything and it wasn't worth it. So, I stopped. In a way, I've stopped caring. And it's been the greatest thing.
As my stepdad (and I'm sure many other people have said.) always told me "If you don't love yourself, how can someone else love you?" And I've always believed that. Because if I can't stand myself, how will anyone else? Yeah, people will love you, but will they put up with you? Will they be there in the long run? Will they be happy?
So basically cut the crap out of your life. No joke. Get rid of the friends that aren't improving your life. Get rid of the baggage that you've carried for so long. Realize that you are a children of our Heavenly Father and He would not want this for you.
That's the one thing I take with me everywhere. I'm a daughter of my Heavenly Father and He loves me. I deserve to be treated like a queen and I won't settle for anything less. Does that mean I'll be single for awhile? Maybe. But I see what true happiness in a marriage is by all the examples around me and I'm not settling for anything less.
If you can't handle that, then you can't handle me.... or my self esteem because it may have taken almost 28 years to get there, but it's here. I am who I am. While I'm not perfect, I'm a good person and a daughter of God. Nothing else matters.
